It so chanced that my work at that time, which always tended towards the mystic and transcendental and eventually brought me into conflict with my friend and colleague Doctor Hastie Lanyon, allowed me time and motivation to look upon the constant battle between my various parts with an eye of science. This gaze allowed me to view the truth which had been hidden hitherto but has now brought me to such a strait that others must surely investigate and find out what I know: that man is not one being but two; both a light in the dark, and the darkness itself. It may be that future scholars will be able to discern more parts in a man than those simple opposites, but it has been enough for me, and now is more than enough. |
