It so chanced that my work at that time, which always tended towards the mystic and transcendental and eventually brought me into conflict with my friend and colleague Doctor Hastie Lanyon, allowed me time and motivation to look upon the constant battle between my various parts with an eye of science. This gaze allowed me to view the truth which had been hidden hitherto but has now brought me to such a strait that others must surely investigate and find out what I know: that man is not one being but two; both a light in the dark, and the darkness itself. It may be that future scholars will be able to discern more parts in a man than those simple opposites, but it has been enough for me, and now is more than enough.

As my scientific studies led me in this direction, so my more lascivious pursuits led me to hope for the same. For I had learnt to live in both states, both light and dark, yet inside the same frame, courting the possibility of revelation and the exposure of the good doctor for no better than a lecher. What if the two persons could be split, separated into two different bodies to lead their own existences? Then there would be no fear of discovery or shame and by the partition, each identity could be allowed to express itself to the fullest extent with no restraint or interference from the other.
