I should have been in bed, but Mother was sick and Father said I could stay up and help him to keep her well. She had got very large and they said that I was going to have a brother or sister when she got better. It was very late when she started crying and screaming.

I was scared.

Father sent me for a cloth to wipe her head, and then, when she didn't stop screaming, he told me to run to Doctor Carver and tell him what was happening and ask him to come back just as quickly as he could.

I ran all the way to the doctor's house. The streets were empty with all the lamps glowing so I was able to run and run without worrying about carriages or other people or anything.
