| < Previous | Again, today, he did not come out until long after I had retired. Sleep does not come to me as swiftly as it once did, and I was lying awake, listening to the sounds of the house cooling, when I heard the door from the courtyard open. Footsteps moved into the corridor and stopped outside my room. I listened carefully, for something about them had disturbed me. They paused for only a few heartbeats before crossing the corridor and I heard the far door open - the door to the maid's, Miss Reilly's, room. The door closed again and for many minutes I heard nothing. I breathed through my mouth during this time, listening for any sound. I was a little shocked at the idea of the doctor going into Miss Reilly's room, but it was not my place to do or say anything unless called upon. Eventually, I heard the door open and close once again and the light footsteps moved up the hall to the doctor's room. |
