A letter arrived with the evening post and I knew my master's hand immediately. My heart pounded loudly in my chest as I read his words, telling me that Doctor Lanyon would call again this evening, and that I was to co-operate with his wishes. I knew immediately from the shake in the handwriting what must have happened. My master had once again changed unbidden into Mister Hyde, but now this alter ego was famous - nay, infamous - and he had been forced to conceal himself. With what was already known about the association between Sir Danvers Carew's murderer and the doctor, there was no way that he could return here. It seems he had decided that the doctor could help by collecting the required chemicals and getting them to him. I wondered for some time why he had not asked Mister Utterson to perform this task, but then realised that the lawyer had already had contact with Hyde and would perhaps not be as amenable as the doctor.

I went through to the cabinet, but found it locked, and the lock had been changed. I called Bradshaw and we attempted to effect entrance, but the door was too thick and too effectively fastened, so I sent him to fetch a locksmith and a carpenter.
