Teaching

I started teaching in 1999 at the same time as I started studying for my MA in Creative Writing at the Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University. My first post was as a tutor for Stockport Adult Learning. I taught a number of short Creative Writing courses at various centres in the Stockport area and also did some Life Writing and Reminiscence sessions with older people in day centres in Stockport.

In 2001, when I started studying for my PhD, also at the MMU, I started teaching there as well. Initially I was an Associate Lecturer on first year modules in Research Methods and Academic Writing, Creative Writing and Renaissance Literature. In my second year as well as carrying forward my roles from the first year, I also became lead lecturer on the second year course in Fiction Writing. This was followed in my third year by further work on the first year modules as well as becoming course leader for a Shakespeare - Text and Performance course being run in the Languages Department. The final year of my PhD saw me repeat the Shakespeare course as well as being course leader for a course on Fiction in English, also in the Languages Dept.

During this time at MMU, I was also appointed as a tutor at Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College where I devised and delivered courses in Creative Writing - at Beginners and Advanced levels - and Shakespeare.

As of 2008, I am now back in the English Dept. at MMU, teaching the second year module in Creative Writing - Prose.

More details about the various courses I have taught can be found on the associated pages listed on the right.

I have also delivered a number of one-off seminars on a variety of subjects. More details about these can be found in the 'Research' section of the site.
